A move can change your health insurance options — sometimes dramatically. If you’ve recently relocated, you may qualify for a Special Enrollment Period (SEP), giving you 60 days to enroll in a new plan or change your existing coverage.
Work with a local advisor, they can help you determine if you qualify and guide you through the entire process so you don’t miss your chance to get coverage.
You may qualify for a SEP if you’ve experienced one of these changes in residence:
Moving to a New ZIP Code or County
-Includes moving within Utah or from another state
-Your new area may have different plans or prices
Moving to the U.S. from Another Country
-Or moving from a U.S. territory
Students
-Moving to or from the place you attend school
Seasonal Workers
-Moving to or from the place you both live and work
Moving to or from a Shelter or Transitional Housing
In most cases, you must have had qualifying health coverage for at least one day during the 60 days before your move
-Exceptions: moving from a foreign country, leaving incarceration, or other specific situations
Moves for medical treatment or vacation generally don’t qualify
Your 60-day enrollment period begins the day you move.
-If you apply before your move date, your new coverage can start as soon as the first day of the month after your move.
-If you apply after moving, coverage will begin the first day of the month after you enroll.
The Marketplace may require proof of:
-Your new address (e.g., utility bill, lease agreement, driver’s license)
-The date you moved
-Prior health coverage (if required)
A local healthcare agent can help you:
-No-cost enrollment help from licensed Utah agents
-Clear guidance on SEP rules and deadlines
-Personalized plan recommendations based on your new household situation
-Step-by-step support to make sure your coverage starts on time
