Special Enrollment Period: Changes in Household

Life changes often mean your health insurance needs change, too. If you’ve had certain changes in your household, you may qualify for a Special Enrollment Period (SEP) — giving you 60 days to sign up for or update your Marketplace health insurance.

Work with a local advisor, they can help you determine if you qualify and guide you through the entire process so you don’t miss your chance to get coverage.

What Counts as a Household Change?

You may qualify for a SEP if you’ve experienced any of these events:

  • Marriage

    • -Getting married creates a SEP for both spouses.

    • -Coverage can start as soon as the first day of the month after you apply.

  • Birth of a Baby

    • -Newborn coverage can start the day of birth.

    • -You can also add your baby to an existing plan or choose a new one.

  • Adoption or Foster Care Placement

    • -Includes adoption, placement for adoption, or placement in foster care.

    • -Coverage can begin the day of the event.

  • Divorce or Legal Separation

    • -You must have lost health coverage due to the separation or divorce to qualify.

  • Death in the Family

    • -If the death results in losing coverage (for example, the policyholder passes away), you may qualify.

What Doesn’t Qualify?

  1. -Marriage to someone who already has coverage without losing your own coverage

  2. -Voluntarily removing a dependent without a qualifying event

When Can You Enroll?

For most household changes, your 60-day window begins:

  1. -On the date of the event (for births, adoptions, foster placements)

  2. -On the date you lose coverage related to the change (for divorce or death in the family)

Tip: If you apply before the event takes effect (such as before your wedding), coverage can often start right after the event.

Documents You May Need

The Marketplace typically requires proof of the event, such as:

  1. -Marriage certificate

  2. -Birth certificate or hospital record

  3. -Adoption or foster placement papers

  4. -Divorce decree

  5. -Death certificate

We’ll help you submit the correct documents the first time so your application isn’t delayed.
