What Income Qualifies for Free or Reduced Health Insurance in Utah?

One of the most common questions we hear: “Do I make too much — or too little — to get help paying for health insurance?” Thanks to the ACA, a wide range of incomes qualify. Here’s how it works.

The Two Types of Assistance

  • Premium Tax Credits (PTCs) — lower your monthly premium
  • Cost-Sharing Reductions (CSRs) — lower deductibles, copays, and out-of-pocket max (Silver plans only)

Premium Tax Credit Range

Eligibility generally falls between 100–400% FPL, though enhanced subsidies extend beyond 400%. There is currently no hard upper income cutoff.

Can You Get Free Health Insurance in Utah?

  • Medicaid / CHIP: Below ~138% FPL may qualify for free or near-free coverage under Utah’s expanded Medicaid.
  • $0 premium plans: Many Utahns at 100–200% FPL qualify for a $0 premium plan after tax credits.

What If You Have Employer Coverage?

You may still qualify for subsidies if your employer’s plan doesn’t meet ACA affordability standards. A local advisor can compare your options for free.

If your income changes mid-year due to a job change, marriage, or other life event, you may qualify for a Special Enrollment Period to update your coverage.
