Special Enrollment Period: Other Qualifying Events

Some life changes don’t fit into “loss of coverage,” “household changes,” or “moving” — but they can still make you eligible for a Special Enrollment Period (SEP).

Work with a local advisor, they can help you determine if you qualify and guide you through the entire process so you don’t miss your chance to get coverage.

What Counts as “Other” Qualifying Events?

You may be eligible for a SEP if you’ve experienced any of the following:

  • Gaining U.S. Citizenship or Lawful Presence

    • -If you recently became a U.S. citizen, national, or lawfully present in the U.S., you may qualify.

  • Leaving Incarceration

    • -This includes being released from prison or jail.

  • AmeriCorps Members

    • -Starting or ending service with AmeriCorps State and National, VISTA, or NCCC.

  • Gaining or Becoming a Dependent Through a Court Order

    • -If a court orders someone to be added to your plan, you may qualify.

  • Medicaid or CHIP “Unwinding”

    • -Losing Medicaid or CHIP due to changes in eligibility after the public health emergency ended.

  • Errors or Misrepresentation

    • -If the Marketplace or your plan made an error that caused you to lose coverage or miss your enrollment opportunity.

  • Exceptional Circumstances

    • -Natural disaster, serious medical emergency, or other events recognized by the Marketplace.

In most cases, your 60-day enrollment window begins:
